I've revised this list all through my life, and now that I'm at a somewhat later stage than I'd intended I thought I'd try to make a definitive list of films that have influenced me, some of them far more than they should have. I shall not again mention Ken Russell's 'The Boy Friend', which is warming soup on a cold night. You'll see my book choices when 'Word Monkey' comes out next year. Rather like my old film pals Anne Billson, Kim Newman and Mark Kermode I saw far too many films through the end of the last century, and could host a conversation about each one I loved until it was time for me to be locked away again. Peter Greenaway was far more driven by art than film but had scored a comparatively sizeable hit for the BFI with 'The Draughtsman's Contract'. The script for his fifth (Dutch/English) feature landed on my desk and I could not make head or tail of it, partly because the three main characters all shared the same name, partly because I read scripts badly and partly because Mr Greenaway came to the office to explain his intentions by referring to dozens of paintings and totally lost me. Yet the resulting film is a triumph. A puzzle-box obsessed with the cycle of death and nature, cruel and funny but in its own way more human than any of his subsequent films, it tells of a grandmother, her daughter and niece, all named Cissie Colpitts, all of whom drown...
